The key factor in the success of any participant in any of the above programs is comprehensive and specialized case management. Although the one common issue all participants share is homelessness, we know that shelter alone is not enough. Each individual and/or family is homeless for a different reason. Each case is carefully assessed and barriers are identified. Once these barriers have been identified, an individualized service plan is developed. The following Featherfist case management models are implemented to address the barriers of participants and their families:

Expedient, Prioritized and Individualized Counseling (EPIC)

The EPIC case management model targets the special needs of the homeless with HIV/AIDS and the unique barriers of homeless veterans. This program uses skilled professionals to work with persons living with HIV and experienced counselors to assist veterans in coping with PTSD.

Housing, Utilization and Training Services (HUTS)

The HUTS case management model targets participants with low barriers who have typically been the victims of displacement due to eviction, natural disaster, family dispute, job layoff, and/or chronic physical problems. These persons usually only need a 'helping hand' to get started again. In some instances, they may need re-training because they lack computer skills, or maybe just a security deposit or first month's rent. Sometimes entitlements like unemployment or emergency funds can be obtained to tide them over until the next job is obtained. Once housed, these participants are usually very successful in maintaining permanent housing for a minimum of 12 months.

Outreach and Comprehensive Assessment (ORCA)

The ORCA case management model targets participants with substance abuse issues and mental illness. This population is typically chronically homeless and requires intense case management. Specialized counseling is provided to those with severe barriers. Sometimes referrals to short-term inpatient programs are necessary before participants can be placed in permanent housing.
